Bringing NPR’s Vision to Life: The Future of Work

Tobi’s colorful, edgy design captured our office’s essence, reflected our mission and is inviting and thought provoking – a truly creative space

Leslie Holmes – NPR

The NPR New York Bureau project, aptly named “The Future of Work,” was an opportunity to create a modern, sustainable office renovation design. NPR’s mission is to connect communities through rich, informative content, and their team wanted to bring this ethos into a physical space that inspires creativity while meeting the highest standards of environmental responsibility.

Our approach at InsideWright always begins with understanding the core values and goals of our clients. For NPR, achieving LEED Gold certification was paramount, reflecting their dedication to sustainability. We embraced this challenge, integrating environmentally conscious materials and innovative design elements to ensure the project not only met but exceeded these standards.

This article highlights the important role that lighting in particular plays in office interior design.  While many people think interior design is just focused on aesthetic priorities of a space, our design focus is on the holistic employee experience – productivity, well-being, and overall functionality of the work environment in a way that reinforces the brand identity of the companies we work with.

Adaptive to Employee Workspace Needs

NPR’s offices are a hub of activity, requiring design that can easily adapt to different needs—from recording studios to green rooms and conference areas. The flexibility of the lighting solutions we chose were the result of understanding the creative workflow of the NPR production staff and consultation with lighting experts to work through the process of the myriad of solutions appropriate for both the audio and video studios, while using sleek fixtures chosen for their minimalistic design and high performance in conference rooms.  This combination and cohesive renovation including workspaces ensures that the spaces are not only functional but also visually aligned with NPR’s brand identity.

More Than Illumination – Sustainable Office Design

For NPR, we developed a comprehensive renovation concept with NPR’s sustainable goals in mind. The custom lighting designs we selected not only provided energy-efficient illumination but also played a crucial role in defining the aesthetic and acoustic environment of the office.

Sustainability was woven into every aspect of the NPR renovation by using technology. The use of Coronet LED’s STFU Acoustic Series in the open work areas, made from 95% recycled PET, exemplifies our commitment to selecting materials that are both high-performing and eco-friendly.

Connecting to Communities

These baffles not only enhance the acoustic comfort of the space but also contribute to NPR’s LEED certification goals by reducing the environmental impact of the renovation.

In the design of the office’s open areas, we introduced a striking spoke configuration in the ceiling, symbolizing NPR’s role as a connector of communities. This design element was extended throughout the space and  carefully crafted using a combination of fixtures, selected for their energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing processes.

A Shared Commitment to LEED and Excellence

The feature in Architectural Record is a celebration of the collaborative effort that brought this project to life that is part of any interior office renovation design. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when design, technology, and sustainability converge to create spaces that are both beautiful and responsible.

At InsideWright, we are honored to be part of NPR’s journey towards a greener, more innovative future. A special thanks to my thoughtful and generous residential client who made this all possible with his donation.

As we continue to explore new frontiers in design, our commitment to sustainable design remains unwavering. We look forward to creating more spaces that reflect the values of our clients and set new benchmarks for high-end interior design.
