PROJECT OVERVIEW

From Rental to Retreat: A Coastal Vacation Home Renovation Rooted in Color, Comfort, and Family

Where primary residences prioritize practicality, vacation homes offer freedom—freedom to dream, to play, and to design with imagination.

Our Upper West Side client had long used their New Jersey shore house as a seasonal rental and investment property. Sparingly used by the family and untouched since the 1980s, the home’s aesthetic felt dated and impersonal. But as retirement approached, so did a shift in perspective. They wanted this property to become a true family retreat—a colorful, personal, and welcoming second home on the coast.

A vibrant, matriarchal family with a deep love for the ocean, they envisioned a design rooted in biophilic elements, bold color, and a warm, coastal aesthetic. We brought this vision to life by layering immersive hues and scenic, nature-inspired design moments throughout the home.

Transforming a longtime rental into a personal haven comes with unique challenges—especially the psychological hurdle of investing in a home that carried years of wear from short-term tenants. The renovation strategy required thoughtful compromises and budget-conscious decisions without sacrificing style or comfort.

Cost-Saving Choices:

    • Opted for a local contractor rather than a known construction manager
    • Installed stock kitchen cabinets from Home Depot

    • Replaced stair treads instead of rebuilding the full staircase

    • Sourced affordable, durable materials

    • Mixed retail and semi-custom furniture for a layered look

Where They Chose to Invest:

    • Removal of popcorn ceilings for a cleaner, modern feel

    • Replacing all carpeting, dated white tile, and floorboards with luxury vinyl tile

    • A luxurious, functional ensuite bathroom

    • Immersive wallpaper in key areas for visual impact

The result is a reimagined seaside escape that reflects their identity and invites connection. It’s always a privilege to redesign multiple homes for the same client—especially when each tells a distinct story.
