PROJECT OVERVIEW
A collaboration on a lighting designer’s home
In 2016, lighting designer Brooke Silber-Carter gave a presentation about LED lighting at a rug showroom in Manhattan. That’s when we first met. Years later she asked us to redesign her family’s kitchen and bathroom and add a spa-like bathroom in their cellar.
Their home abuts a nature preserve, and Brooke loves the color green. We brought the outdoors—in, with a mosaic by Sicis, while immersing her in her favorite hue. In their former kitchen, her husband Ken would stand in the corner while she was cooking. This was a pain point in their small, poorly designed kitchen. We resolved it through thoughtful space planning.
The adjacent bathroom had a tub. We re-designed it with an accessible shower for ease of use during their aging parents’ visits. The wall tile was value-engineered 3 times. We wanted the white tile to have a triangular pattern which would speak to the black and white mosaic detail. We landed on a simple elongated subway tile which allowed the mosaic detail to shine on its own.
For their cellar, we had discussed installing a sauna. Cost and ceiling height proved prohibitive, so we created a spa-like bathroom for ultimate escape and relaxation.
Throughout her home, Brooke added a variety of lighting layers controlled by Lutron-programmed scenes. Please reach out if you’d like to see how these different lighting scenes alter the experience of each space.
